History of the Abbey
Founded in 1196, Torre Abbey has a story to tell that is 800 years in the making. It is the most complete medieval monastic site in Devon and Cornwall. Its national significance is identified by its status as a Scheduled Ancient Monument incorporating both Grade I and Grade II Listed Buildings.
Through it all, it is the hospitality to passing strangers and guests, for which it is most known. From its time as a monastery to its heyday as a family mansion, it has welcomed aristocracy, nobility and landed gentry. Since coming into public ownership in 1930, it has become home to a museum, art gallery and award-winning gardens, welcoming the 1948 and 2012 Olympics, local visitors, national and international tourists and VIPs including Her Majesty the Queen.
As a result of two major restoration projects, completed in 2013, Torre Abbey now offers visitors a unique mix of original artefacts with hi-tech interactive interpretation, set within beautiful surroundings, in which to explore the buildings, themed collections and gardens. Visitors can also relax and refresh at the new shop and café.
